From virtual hype to reality in action
Daniela Perlmutter, Head of Product and Solutions Marketing, Amdocs
This year’s Mobile World Congress certainly crossed into a new paradigm on a number of different dimensions:
- Size: With attendees crossing the 100,000 barrier for the first time, it’s clear our industry has dramatically evolved.
- Mobile and beyond: MWC has expanded beyond telecom, and while the fusion into other industries such as automobile or mobile health is not new, this year it became all pervasive, highlighted by the conference’s bold tagline: “mobile is everything.”
- From innovation to (virtual) reality: Innovation is a given at MWC, so what really drew attention this year was the focus on 5G, real IoT use cases and the consensus on the next killer app – virtual reality.
Conducting my own reality check at the event with service providers, industry partners and analysts, I found that while the buzz revolved around the cool, more forward-looking experiences of VR, IoT new apps, the actual reality is that the industry must still focus on driving today’s business, and that of the near future, rather than 2020 and beyond.
Which is where we see a fundamental need for CSPs to transform the way they engage their customers; diversify their business with new types of services beyond communications as well as attract new types of customers; empower their business and their experience through big data analytics and become agile businesses to stay ahead of their competitors.
For example, borrowing from the Amazon customer journey, imagine CSP end users who could purchase and pay digitally for data plans, enjoy promotions based on their specific usage and profiles (and not just for communication packages, but also for hard goods such as headphones or digital goods like music, specific TV channels or TV series) all in one, consistent experience. At our MWC booth, we set up the Amdocs Digital Store to show how this could be done.
Indeed, MWC was a great opportunity for Amdocs to introduce our new cloud-enabled product portfolio release, Amdocs CES 10. With CES 10, we enable CSPs to change the rules, providing them with the freedom to innovate by implementing a multi-play suite in operation in less than a year and capture the world of digital immediacy.
Amdocs CES 10 is packed with new capabilities to drive service providers’ digital transformation; help them diversify their business with entertainment, occasional users, B2B, and IoT; empower their business with big data management and operations, and achieve service agility by leveraging NFV (as we demonstrated together with Vodafone and an eco-system of partners at MWC).
With CES 10’s capabilities and groundbreaking implementation approach, combined with Amdocs mobile financial services, new digital services and partner ecosystem, we believe CSPs have the freedom to take the MWC hype and turn it into reality, today.
