Waitrose has unveiled plans to sell more products overseas after striking a deal with online retailer British Corner Shop. The upmarket supermarket will offer more than 2,000 own-label products through the retailer, which ships British products to more than 138 countries.

As part of the tie-up, international customers will be able to buy Waitrose products including Waitrose Duchy Organic, Waitrose Baby, essential Waitrose and the Waitrose 1* range.

The move will also allow Waitrose to “enter entirely new territories” including the United States and Germany.

Mark Williamson, Waitrose commercial director, said: “British Corner Shop gives a global audience access to Waitrose and provides a platform for our British suppliers to showcase the great food and drink they produce.”

British Corner Shop – which ships more than 50,000 orders to the British ex-pat community – said more Waitrose products would be added to its online store in the future, including biscuits, cakes, teas and soup.

Mark Callaghan, managing director of the British Corner Shop, said: “We know the Waitrose brand will go down well with our British ex-pat customer base, in particular categories such as biscuits and household are in demand – and the Waitrose Duchy Organic brand is often requested.”

Waitrose saw profits fall 17% amid ”exceptionally tough” conditions in the British grocery sector, according to the latest accounts filed to Companies House.

Pre-tax profit declined to £66.6 million in the year to January, with pension costs associated with parent firm John Lewis contributing to the slide.

Sales also dipped from £6 billion to £5.9 billion.
